Susan P. Sherkow, M.D. Children & Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Susan Sherkow, MD, founded the Sherkow Center for Child Development and Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2009 as a not-for-profit to promote the optimal development of
children, adolescents, and their families through treatment, education and research. Dr. Sherkow integrates her practice of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychoanalysis with a neurodevelopmental perspective to offer innovative effective interventions for children with autism spectrum and other developmental differences. She leads a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care.
Susan P. Sherkow, MD, is a training and supervising analyst at the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute and Society and an instructor and supervising analyst at the
New York Psychoanalytic Institute and Society. She is also an assistant clinical professor at the Mt. Sinai and Albert Einstein Colleges of Medicine.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Describe key features of Autism Spectrum Disorder from both neurodevelopmental and psychoanalytic perspectives.
- Compare and integrate psychoanalytic concepts (e.g., transference, countertransference, affect regulation) with contemporary neurodevelopmental models in understanding children with developmental differences.
- Identify common challenges in engagement, communication, and symbolic functioning in children on the autism spectrum, and their implications for treatment.
Participants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute maintains responsibility for this program and its content. CPI is licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to sponsor continuing education credits for (license numbers in parentheses): Social Workers (159.000122), Professional Counselors (197.000202), Marriage and Family Therapy Therapists (168.00204), and Clinical Psychologists (268.000091).
Eligible professionals will receive 1.0 continuing education credits for attending the entire program. To receive these credits an evaluation form must be completed online. Learners must claim the amount of time spent in the educational activity and that will be the amount of credit they will earn.
Continuing Education credits (CMEs) are not available for physicians for this program.
